Does DuPage County Sheriff’s Office have residency requirement?

Yes. The boundaries are fairly large.

The Northern Boundary start from the intersection of I-94 and Illinois Route 120 in Waukegan, due east to Lake Michigan and due west to the Western Boundary Line.

The Western Boundary line extends from a point at the intersection of Illinois Routes 173 and 76, due west to the Western border of Boone County, starting from that point, then the Western Boundary of Boon County and DeKalb County, extending due south through LaSalle County to I-80.

The Southern Boundary line starts at the intersection of the Western Boundary and I-80 in LaSalle County, due east to the Indiana State line.

The Eastern Boundary is from the intersection of East Brunswick Road and the Indiana State line, due north along the Illinois State line to Lake Michigan and then north along Lake Michigan to the Northern Boundary.

Does DuPage County have a restriction on tattoos or body piercings?

Yes. Offensive tattoos or body art shall not be visible while on-duty or while representing the Sheriff’s Office.

Pierced ears are acceptable, any other body piercing or alteration of any are of the body that is visible while in uniform is prohibited.

Does the Sheriff’s Office allow beards?

Yes, facial hair is acceptable. Must be neatly groomed and maintained within an inch or less.

Does the Sheriff’s Office allow outside employment?

Yes. Employees must obtain written approval from the Sheriff prior to engaging in any outside employment. To avoid a potential conflict of interest, members may not engage in outside or secondary employment as a peace officer for any other public agency or be a private investigator. Outside employment is limited to a maximum of 20 hours per week.


What hours do Deputies at the Sheriff’s Office work?

The majority of the Deputies assigned to Corrections and Law Enforcement work a 12 hour shift. The allows for as many days off as worked during the year.

Deputies in a specialized unit have different work hours depending on the assignment.

Do Deputies rotate shift hours?

When a Deputy in Corrections or Law Enforcement has completed the required training, they will be assigned a shift depending on availability. Once a year, Deputies will bid for the shift preference. When all shift bids are submitted, shift assignments will be distributed. The shift assignments are good for the year. Exceptions would be needs of the office or assignment to a specialized unit.

We do not rotate shifts unless necessary to fill open positions or the needs of the Office demand it.

What kind of benefit or leave time is offered at the Sheriff’s Office?

The Sheriff’s Office provides for paid vacation time, sick time, personal days, and paid holidays after the probation period is complete.

We also allow for compensatory time in lieu of overtime.

What equipment does the Sheriff’s Office provide?

Deputies assigned to Law Enforcement are assigned their own radio, body worn camera, tablet, medical equipment, taser, and take home vehicle.

All Deputies at the Sheriff’s Office are issued body armor and uniforms.

What other benefits does the Sheriff’s Office offer?

We offer health insurance, life insurance, and voluntary insurance like dental, vision, and disability.

All members are enrolled in the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund. We offer deferred compensation, Employee Assistance Program, and tuition reimbursement.

The Sheriff’s Office also has many in-house training programs.
